Enchanted Garden of Strawberries Artist Statement By: Kylee Cromwell Enchanted Garden of Strawberries is a mixed-media form of art. It is made from a clay sculpture that I molded into plaster. I painted them using watercolors and the juice from a strawberry. I then photographed my sculptures and placed them into Photoshop to create this magical fairy garden. I then transferred it onto a piece of wood. When making these sculptures I wasn't really sure what I wanted to do with them, I started playing around with paints and textures until it reminded me of some rock monument you would find in the woods. That's when I decided to create this forest. I wanted my viewers to be transported to a fictional world filled with strawberries. mushrooms, fairies and let your imagination run freely. The fairy is on a quest to find these strawberry-shaped rocks that have been out in the forest for centuries, that's why I decided to make them look old a dirty. This is a very nostalgic piece f...

Breakfast with Grandma  Artist Statement By: Kylee Cromwell Breakfast with Grandma is made from different types of wood, and the bottom of an old stool I found in a junk pile outside the wood shop. I drew a squiggly shape on the large circular piece of wood, it reminded me of an egg, and when I was digging through old scraps of wood I found something that had the shape of a piece of bacon. That's when it sparked my idea of doing a breakfast platter. Growing up I spent a lot of time with my grandmother. One of my favorite memories with her is when she would take me out for breakfast. We went to this local diner, called Gypsey Diner in Cary, North Carolina. We would always order the old-fashioned breakfast platter that came with pancakes, eggs, bacon, and a large class of OJ. That's represented by the wood version I made. We would always sit up at the bar part of the diner with the vintage stools that had shiny red cushions. This piece is an interpretation of my life in an abstract form. Each shape was cut out to resemble a puzzle piece. Each piece is attached in a way a puzzle would be not glued or held by something else. Because even during the hardest times in life you are the only one who can hold yourself up. The marbles are placed in a way of being on your journey of life. The gabs and marbles that are not clustered together represent being lost or alone until you find your way back on your path. I wanted it to be able to hold flowers like a vase because we as human beings hold such a special place on earth.

Right sculpture 4" x 6" x 3".  The title on the left titled "The Fish" shows a human bust with a fish head, I chose to attach the fish head to a human bust to show that humans are affecting the fish population. The figure on the right titled "Corporate" is a male figure dressed as a businessman to show that we are overfishing for the money it makes.

  Kylee Cromwell Gregor's Room "A visual response to the short story  The Metamorphosis  by Franz Kafka."    White Copy Paper, Ink (No Adhesives)  Largest sculpture measures 8" x 6" x 3" "The sculpture collection reflects my perception of the short story  The Metamorphosis  by Franz Kafka." From reading this story and focusing on Gregor's room, during this project I wanted to make his room look sad a depressing. I chose subtle colors and added a pop of color to make it feel sad but also make it stand out from other things in the room. I decided to make the bed frame and headboard into the shape of a cloud because from the story it seemed like he had a lot of issues so I wanted to make it feel like his head was always in the clouds. I made him a cigarette to show that his personality is kind of like what people do with a cig they throw it on the ground and stomp on it.

Kylee Cromwell Slobs! Movie Inspiration: The Florida Project (2017) This image explores the ideas of what it looks like when a child has no rules or disciplines for their actions. Kids think they can do whatever they want unless they are told not to, if no one tells them what they are doing is wrong they will just keep doing it. This photo shows what it's like to grow up in poverty, not all kids are growing up with homecooked meals gathered around the kitchen table with their family members. There are some kids who are digging through the fridge trying to find something to eat while their parents are working two jobs so they can provide their kids with a homecooked meal. I wanted to show what dinner would look like for a kid when there is no parental supervision or the parents just don't care about what the kid is doing. I wanted to make it look messy because kids love to make a mess when they are eating.
