Elizabeth Tolson
About her work:

My work explores the themes of fertility, motherhood, time, and space through ceramics, weaving, and sewing. It is informed by my personal narrative, the body, and the experiences it carries. These mediums share a common thread in which they are rooted in a deep history of human production and tradition. My weaving and sewing work emphasizes the intertwining of the body and the experiences it carries.

Camille Stenium
Consuming Meaning, 2014

In her sculptures, Steinum deals with material concerns from a feminist perspective. There is a clear distinction in her body of work between handmade patchworks and more mechanized pieces weaved on a loom, but in both cases, she uses the material to address questions of female labor. (Textiles are, of course, traditionally women’s work.) Even the metal frameworks—though they may appear to be readymade manufactured objects—are carefully designed by the artist and custom-made.
